After the kiss, nothing much happened between Eliza and me for the next several weeks mainly because I started school a few days later and became very busy, much more than I had anticipated. At the same time, I didn’t want her to believe I needed her and therefore never called her. Possibly for the same reason, or maybe because she didn’t want to give me the impression that she was chasing me, especially after what she had told me during the dinner at my apartment, she never made a move in my direction either, undoubtedly waiting for me to do something. In short, we just saw each other on Fridays and acted together as if nothing had happened between us, although, from the Friday following the kiss, she finally acknowledged my presence and treated me like everybody else while carefully calculating her every word, look and gesture in such a way that I couldn’t infer from them that she was making advances to me.

However, I was not worried in the least. I didn’t doubt that she was mine and in fact enjoyed that time very much as I was able every night to imagine different sets of circumstances that would precipitate us in each other’s arms and to dream in painfully wonderful detail of the moment when she would undress in front of me for the first time as well as our subsequent lovemaking. It gave me a chance to live those moments dozens of times and to make them follow the course of my fancy before unyielding reality would freeze them once and for all.

At the same time, I realized that this delightful wait would soon have to be cut short not so much because I feared Eliza would get tired of our little game but mainly because of Brett and Johanna. After Eliza had clearly shown me, during our second lunch together, that she was getting tired of her boyfriend and after she had kissed me with so much passion, I had naively thought it was merely a matter of days before she broke up their relationship, but she kept on seeing him. Indeed, on several occasions during the Friday dinners that followed, I overheard her mention activities or plans that inevitably included him or speak about him as if everything was normal between them. I don’t think, though, that she brought up his name to make me jealous or to encourage a move on my part because she was careful not to do it in front of me and couldn’t know I was hearing her when she did. At any rate, I couldn’t stand the fact that she was still going out and probably sleeping with him. I knew it had to stop very soon and didn’t question my ability to convince Eliza to end her relationship with him since I firmly believed, despite the little evidence in my favor, that she preferred me to him.

Johanna also constituted a major problem, especially since the evening I had made the mistake of holding her hand.
